Press release! New Workstation Training film

We’ve got your back! Local chiropractors help thousands working from home during lockdown.

A Jersey business, who had to close its doors when the island went into lockdown, has taken their very hands- on treatment online in order to keep helping islanders.

Grant and Penny Henderson, who together run Active Chiropractic, were inundated with islanders needing help adapting to their new working from home environment. They quickly realized that whilst they couldn’t treat people as they normally would, they could still help them.

Penny said: “Office workers were becoming very uncomfortable, instead of working sitting on an ergonomic office chair with two screens, they were working a full day sitting on their beds or using a kitchen chair and a laptop. The purpose of our job is to help people and we wanted to find a way to help people suffering with back neck and shoulder pain caused by spending long hours working from home.”

The husband and wife team initially wrote a series of blogs explaining how to set up home workstations, but quickly realised something more visual was required. With the help of their daughter Alicia (an ex Hautlieu student now living and working in Holland) they wrote, filmed and edited a series of short films.

Grant demonstrated how people could make some small adjustments to the way they were sitting and be much more comfortable when working from home. Grant said: “We filmed these in our kitchen using our own kitchen table and chairs. The films showed how using a plug-in keyboard and mouse and raising your laptop up on some books helps move your spine from a painful ‘C’ shape to a much more comfortable ‘S’ shape. Combine this with an improved sitting position and regular short stretch-breaks away from the screen and people quickly found they had less pain and could achieve much more in their working day.”

The simple films have been viewed thousands of times throughout the Channel Islands, and many island companies have shared them in other jurisdictions.

And with many workers still wanting to stay working at home, even on a part time basis, Grant and Penny have launched an online home and office workstation training film. Using the film, people train themselves to correctly set up their home and office workstations and then complete a short questionnaire to demonstrate that knowledge. It is suitable for use by employees in the Channel Islands and anywhere around the world. Company branding can be added and the employers own office equipment can be demonstrated. Additionally health and safety messages that are specific to the company, location or individual buildings can easily be incorporated.

Standard Learning Points: · Good sitting posture. · Breaks, how often and how long. · Adjusting your office chair. · Setting up your monitor, mouse and keyboard. · Laptop use at work and at home. · Adapting a kitchen chair for computer work. · Using a standing desk.

Grant said: “It was heart breaking to close the clinic, having to contact all the patients and to tell them that we didn’t know when we would be able to see them again. We have spent the last 25 years helping people in the Channel Islands, it’s no exaggeration to say that we have helped more than ten thousand people. Having to close the clinic was without question, the most painful experience of our professional lives and we both found it devastating. But now by adapting to the climate we’ve still been able to help people and are going to be able to continue helping them work from home into the future if they choose to.”
